Why bytes, and not characters?
Amazon measures backend search terms in bytes. A plain English letter costs one byte, but an umlaut, an accent or a curly apostrophe costs two, and an emoji can cost four. A German or French seller who counts characters instead of bytes quietly loses a third of the field without ever seeing an error. This page counts both, so you can see the gap.

Measured is not the same as fixed
A counter can tell you a title is eleven characters too long. It cannot tell you which eleven to cut. Roast your listing free and you get the rewritten version back - scored, inside every limit on this page, and still in your own voice.

Why each version differs: every card is written fresh to the rule printed on it - Amazon now uses a 75-character Item name plus 125-character Item Highlights and benefit bullets, Etsy uses buyer-friendly titles and up to 13 tags, eBay uses item specifics, and Walmart uses structured attributes.
